THURSDAY, AUGUST 1

COMPETITION CONVERSATION:  A HIP (Historically Informed Performance) Approach to Keyboard Music

David Breitman, Director of Historical Performance, and Webb Wiggins, Associate Professor of Harpsichord – both from Oberlin College and Conservatory – will explore the topic showcasing the harpsichord collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

COMPETITION CONVERSATION:   Classical Improvisation And the Cadenza

That moment in every Mozart or Beethoven concerto when the pianist stuns and thrills the audience with digital delight: the cadenza!   Cleveland Institute of Music’s Marshall Griffith will illuminate the secrets of the art of improvisation in his wonderfully engaging way.

CIPC Executive Director Pierre van der Westhuizen will lead Competition jurors in discussing what jurors listen for during performances and how music competitions impact careers.

COMPETITION CONVERSATION:  The Art Of Performing Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas

Peter Takács, Professor of Piano at Oberlin College and Conservatory, will delve into the history, craft, and passion of Beethoven’s sublime piano sonatas.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7

FILM:  The Art Of Chopin

A thought-provoking and enlightening film paying tribute to the art of Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849), whose unique and inimitable writing laid the groundwork for twentieth century music and the modern piano.  Includes commentary from pianists such as Garrick Ohlsson and Arthur Rubinstein.

CIPC YOUNG ARTISTS SHOWCASE RECITAL

Prize winners from the 2012 CIPC Young Artists Competition will perform in recital. Hear the next generation of concert artists!

MASTER CLASSES

$5 per session

Competition jurors Nelita True and Roberto Plano will conduct master classes for local conservatory students and CIPC Young Artist Competition winners.  A fascinating opportunity to observe master and student at work.

Note:  Tickets for the Master Classes must be purchased at the door beginning one hour prior to each session.
